The 49ers were without their starting quarterback Brock Purdy, receivers Juan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall and tight end George Kittle, but they were still able to pull out a victory on “Thursday Night Football.”

With Mac Jones making his third start of the season, the 49ers jumped to a 14-0 lead, the quarterback showed guts all night, getting hit multiple times but staying in the game. In overtime, Jones led one final drive, and after a defensive stop, the wounded 49ers got a 26-23 win in Los Angeles.

Jones, who was making his third start of the season in the place of Brock Purdy, finished with 342 yards and two touchdowns and advanced to 3-0 as a starter; his favorite target was Kendrick Bourne, who had a career game with 10 receptions for 142 yards. On the other side, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford put up his highest-passing yards total as a Ram, throwing for 385 yards and three touchdowns. But, it was not enough.

When the game was tied at 23-23 to start overtime, the San Francisco offense put together a eight play, 37 yard drive to take the lead on an Eddy Piniero field goal. Los Angeles drove all the way down to inside the 20-yard line on the ensuing drive, but the 49ers defense stuffed Kyren Williams on a 4th & 1 to seal the ball game. Robert Saleh’s defense also forced a crucial Williams fumble on the one-yard line with less than two minutes in the fourth quarter.

San Francisco advanced to 4-1 on the 2025 season, taking sole possession of first place in the NFC West. The 49ers now have beaten all three divisional opponents through the first five weeks in the Rams, the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals.

The Sporting News followed all the action from the second consecutive NFC West thriller on “Thursday Night Football.” Check out all the action below.

11:30 p.m. FIELD GOAL: The Rams pass rush did not get a sack all of regulation, but is able to get to Jones on second down, pushing San Francisco back. On third down, the pass rush gets to Jones again, forcing him to throw short, but it falls incomplete.

11:28 p.m.: Once again, Jones and McCaffrey connect, this time on a curl route for seven yards to get down to the Los Angeles 14.

Though, the next play, Jones is brought down, setting up a 3rd and long.

11:25 p.m.: The Los Angeles kickoff misses the landing zone, and the 49ers will start at the 40-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Jones connects with Kyle Juszczyk, who takes it across midfield for 12 yards.

11:24 p.m.: Overtime is set to begin with the 49ers getting the ball first.

Both teams will have a chance on offense, as part of the new overtime format this season.

End of the fourth quarter: 49ers 23, Rams 23

11:18 p.m. FIELD GOAL: Karty, who already missed a field goal and an extra point tonight, had a chance to tie the game, and this time he does.

With 2 seconds remaining, the game is tied at 23-23. It looks like we will be going to overtime in Los Angeles.

11:16 p.m.: On 4th & 3, Stafford finds Williams – who fumbled on the previous drive – and the back takes it all the way down to the San Francisco 30.

Los Angeles is in field goal range.

11:12 p.m.: San Francisco was pinned on its own one-yard line, and Kyle Shanahan decides to play it conservative, running three times.

The Rams, without any timeouts, get the ball back with 53 seconds remaining. They will start right on the 50-yard line.

11:08 p.m.: The San Francisco 49ers defense has not had a good second half, but at the most crucial time the unit makes the biggest play of the game.

Williams gets the hand off again, but tackle Alred Collins gets a hand in there and the running back fumbles. San Francisco takes over at the one-yard line.

11:07 p.m.: Right out of the two-minute warning, Williams breaks his longest run of the night for 21 yards. The Rams are all the way down to the 49ers 10.

11:02 p.m.: On the first play of the drive, Stafford connects with Nacua for the ninth time tonight for 11 yards. The next play, he finds his other star receiver,  Adams , for 18, and Los Angeles is already down to the San Francisco 36.

49ers 23, Rams 20

10:58 p.m.: Though the offense was able to move the ball, the 49ers stall out near midfield. With 2:52 remaining, Eddy Pineiro hits a 59-yard field goal to give the 49ers a 23-20 lead.

10:53 p.m.: The 49ers faced a third down again, and Jones hits McCaffrey for the first time since the touchdown. McCaffrey takes it 16 yards to get the San Francisco offense to the 50.

Two plays later, Jones connects with Bourne for the 10th time of the night.

10:46 p.m.: The offenses have exchanged three-and-outs, this time with Stafford and Adams miscommunicating and the quarterback throwing to the wrong spot.

A 59 punt by Ethan Evans downs the 49ers at their own two.

10:41 p.m.: With momentum shifting the Rams’ way, Jones tries to hit Robinson on a 3rd & 8, but he misses the wide receiver.

San Francisco will need to punt again.

49ers 20, Rams 20

10:35 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: Los Angeles has stormed back from down 14-0 to take its first lead of the night. Stafford connects with Williams for the duo’s second touchdown of the night, and Williams walks in once again.

Stafford has three touchdowns. But, on the extra point, Karty misses and the game remains tied.

10:33 p.m.: Adams gets his second reception of the night, and it’s a huge one. Stafford hits him over the middle of the field for 26 yards, getting Los Angeles to the San Francisco 32.

10:15 p.m.: Jones did not even miss an offensive play, coming back out for the 49ers next drive.

Los Angeles went on a seven-play, 68 yard drive which spanned 2:48, giving the quarterback some time to recoup.

49ers 20, Rams 14

10:11 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: The Rams have cut into the deficit, and it was Puka Nacua. Stafford connects with his favorite receiver, who reels it in in traffic for a one-yard touchdown. It is now a one-possession game.

10:04 p.m.: While in commercial break, Jones got up, jogged to the sideline, and looks alright.

49ers 20, Rams 7

10:02 p.m. FIELD GOAL: The worst has happened for San Francisco: Mac Jones is down on the field.

The quarterback was hit on third down and was grabbing his leg. He is being attended to by trainers. The 49ers still get a field goal on the drive, but the main concern is Jones’ health.

9:57 p.m.: Bourne has been Jones’ favorite connection tonight, and the two connect again on a 3rd &4. San Francisco moves all the way down to the 12.

Bourne has six receptions for 99 yards.

9:54 p.m.: On 3rd & 8, Jones tries to find Tonges on the right side of the field, but Rams’ corner Darius Williams interferes with him. The 49ers move the chains.

The next play, Jones finds Bourne for 19 yards, lobbing it over two Rams defenders, and San Francisco is inside the 30.

9:50 p.m.: Los Angeles was driving, but two crucial drops from Whittington and Williams force the Rams to attempt a field goal. But, Joshua Karty hits it wide right and the score remains 17-7.

9:47 p.m.: For the second time tonight, Stafford has connected deep with a tight end. This time, it’s Davis Allen for a 20-yard completion to get it down to the San Francisco 39.

9:45 p.m.: San Francisco has kicked off and the second half is officially underway.

Halftime: 49ers 17, Rams 7

9:30. FIELD GOAL: The San Francisco offense has been clicking tonight, and it sums up a great first half with a field goal to extend the lead to 10.

9:26 p.m.: Jones converts with Tonges for the second time tonight on a 3rd & 10, and the 49ers keep it moving.

A few plays later, McCaffrey finds space for eight yards to move inside the 30. San Francisco is now 4-for-7 on third down tonight.

9:23 p.m.: At the two minute warning, the 49ers are right near midfield with the ball.

49ers 14, Rams 7

9:14 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: The Rams offense is clicking, and now it has its first touchdown of the day.

Inside the red zone, Stafford hits a wide open Williams out of the backfield, and he strides in for the touchdown. Stafford has his first passing touchdown of the night and Los Angeles cuts the lead to seven.

9:11 p.m.: Facing another third down, Stafford throws one up to rookie tight end Terrance Fergusson, who brings it down for a 21-yard completion. Fergusson, the tight end from Oregon, hauls in a big one for his first reception of the game.

The next play, Stafford once again finds someone downfield, this time its Jordan Whittington for 22 yards. Los Angeles is deep in San Francisco territory.

9:08 p.m.: Adams has his first reception of the night, with Stafford hitting him on a left-side curl route for 11 yards. The next play, Stafford finds Nacua near the line-to-gain, but a defensive holding makes it an automatic first down.

9:04 p.m.: San Francisco is unable to covert on a 3rd & 5, with Jones trying to hit Bourne but the receiver drops it.

Los Angeles takes over on its own 15-yard line, down 14.

8:57 p.m.: Right when it looks like the Rams are in business, they turn it over. Blake Corum, the second year running back out of Michigan, drops a pitch play, and the 49ers jump on the ball.

San Francisco takes over up 14-0.

8:56 p.m.: Los Angeles now goes for it on a 4th & 9 just ahead of midfield, and it’s Williams bringing it up the field to keep the chains moving.

8:53 p.m.: The Rams keep the drive moving, with Stafford hitting Nacua for the second time of the night. This time, it goes for 14 yards.

49ers 14, Rams 0

8:48 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: The 49ers score a touchdown again, and this time, it’s Christian McCaffrey.

It’s the quarterback’s second touchdown of the day.

8:47 p.m.: Facing a 3rd & 9, Jones once again connects with a receiver downfield to move the chains. This time, it’s Demarcus Robinson, who gets both feet down on the left sideline for an 18-yard completion.

End of the first quarter: 49ers 7, Rams 0

8:43 p.m.: The first quarter was all about the San Francisco offense.

At the end of one, the 49ers are outgaining the Rams 139 to seven and are knocking on the door again. Mac Jones is 9-for-11 for 112 yards and a touchdown.

8:40 p.m.: San Francisco goes for it on fourth down for the second time on the drive, and once again, it converts. A Brian Robinson one-yard carry gets the offense down to the Los Angeles 38.

8:36 p.m.: With the 49ers near midfield, Kyle Shanahan opts to go for it on a 4th & inches. Jones keeps it himself on a quarterback sneak and San Francisco keeps the drive going.

8:29 p.m.: The 49ers get the first sack of the night. Robert Saleh’s defense blitzed on second down, and it was Bryce Huff who got to Stafford for a -11 yard sack.

Los Angeles is unable to convert on third down and the first drive results in a punt.

8:28 p.m.: On second down, Stafford rolls left and hits Nacua for his first reception of the night. After the five-yard reception, Kyren Williams gets his first touch on a two-yard carry, moving the chains.

49ers 7, Rams 0

8:22 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: San Francisco might be without some major weapons, but it didn’t stop the 49ers from making a statement in the opening minutes.

On 1st and goal from the Rams 6, Jones finds a wide open Jake Tonges for a touchdown to open the scoring. The quarterback was 5-for-5 for 77 yards and a touchdown on the drive.

8:20 p.m.: Jones’ first connection of the night to a player not-named McCaffrey is Kendrick Bourne.

Jones hits Bourne, his former Patriots teammate, on a drag route, and Bourne takes it 35 yards before being brought down right outside of the red zone.

8:18 p.m.: The first three 49ers plays have both ended up in CMC’s hands.

After opening up with a short-yardage run, Jones hits McCaffrey on a screen pass and the receiver finds space, turning it upfield for 15 yards.
