Who is Erica Stoll? Everything to know about Rory McIlroy’s wife following Ryder Cup glory

32

Rory McIlroy was proudly supported by his wife Erica Stoll over the weekend as Team Europe not only retained the Ryder Cup, but won the golfing tournament in New York following a difficult final day.

Europe retained the title on Sunday in New York after Shane Lowry delivered the crucial half-point in match number eight, bringing Europe to 14 points.

The cup was won once again by Europe after Tyrrell Hatton earned the final half point needed for the win.

Stoll, who supported her husband in her native New York, has been married to the Down man for eight years, with the pair sharing four-year-old daughter, Poppy.

The pair were set to divorce last year amid rift rumours, but not long after revealed they had ‘resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.’

But who is Erica and how did she and Rory meet? Here’s everything you need to know…

Who is Erica Stoll?

Erica Stoll hails from Irondequoit, New York. She was a tennis player in high school but switched to golf post-education. The 37-year-old holds a degree in marketing from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Following college, Stoll secured a job with the PGA of America. During her stint at the organisation, she worked as an office manager and the manager of championship volunteer operations.

Erica is also known to be a keen sailor and loves baking. EVOKE report that she is a fan of the American dating show, The Bachelor.

How did Erica and Rory meet?

Erica and Rory met at the Ryder Cup in 2012. Stoll was still working for PGA, at the time as a transport official.

When McIlroy almost missed his tee-time due to time-zone confusion, Stoll got him a police escort to the course.

The pair were merely friends until things got romantic in 2014. McIlroy had actually been dating tennis professional Caroline Wozniacki when he first met Stoll. He went on to propose to Wozniacki in 2013 but the pair called it quits a few months later.

When did they get married?

In December 2015, the golfer was set to pop the question in Paris, however, nearly cancelled the trip to the city of love following a terrorist attack. The couple decided to go to the fFrench capital regardless and suss the mood out, with Rory’s initial plan going off without a hitch.

They exchanged vows in April 2017 at the stunning Ashford Castle in County Mayo. The celeb-studded affair included everyone from Jamie Dornan to Stevie Wonder in attendance.

One Direction’s Niall Horan also attended the nuptials.

How many kids have they?

The pair share one daughter together. Poppy Kennedy McIlroy was born in Florida on August 31, 2020.

The four-year-old has already shown she’s well able to a club and golf ball after a clip of her on the course over the tournament was shared to the Masters social media page.

Tapping the ball with the lightest of taps during the Par Three Tournament, the crowd erupted as Poppy got the ball right into the hole.

Why were Erica and Rory splitting?

In May 2024, it was revealed that Rory had filed for divorced from Erica following seven years of marriage.

A statement from the golfer’s representative said a ‘divorce had been filed,’ and stressed that Rory wanted ‘to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible.’

Rory filed for divorce on May 13, a day after winning the Wells Fargo Championship for the fourth time and just three days before the beginning of the US PGA Championship.

During the brief period, Rory was linked to CBS Sports presenter Amanda Balonis after the pair were particularly flirty during one interview.

Since the almost-divorce Rory and Erica have put on a united front, with the New Yorker a steady support over the weekend after her husband made history at the Masters.
